He is staring unseeingly at the pouch, turning it in his hands. Inside was Itachi's belated birthday present, and Sasuke was still debating with himself whether it was an as good idea as he had first thought, or if he should give in to the urge to throw it into one of the lakes. But since he had already mentioned the gift to Itachi he can't really back out, and he remains sitting, waiting.]

His actions over the course of the previous even have left him wary of how Sasuke might react now, but he'll no longer deny the boy the chance to speak with him.]

A tired and - well not quite grim, not quite resigned, perhaps more like resolved - it's a complicated mixture of a lot of things. It's a simple reason for what will probably be a brief visit. He has two missions back to back. A month's worth of time spent -- with Them. It's a see you in a while. A I've not disappeared out of Luceti, even if you did catch the journal announcement last evening.
Because he'll be gone a month.
And a lot can happen in a month.
And simple farewells can turn into permanent goodbyes so quickly here. The Luceti he leaves will not quite be the Luceti he returns to... that is simple fact.

And sometimes he grows very still, when the building noises get loud for instance. There is one part of him that is aware, the part that will react with no thought, and will force him to action if he perceives a threat. There is no reaction when you enter and come close however. Ace had shoved some food into him before Marco had taken him, right? But his body had been living off its reserves for so long that it would take more than a few bites of food for things to return to what served as equilibrium for him.
Moving, for he needs to move, just brings more pain. Muscle aches - another symptom of more than moderate sleep deprivation setting in. And cold. An increased sensitivity to cold is another, and he curls despite himself in the sheets. It is not cold in the apartment but the bed is warm and he is fighting off trembling from another source.

Yeah. That pulse of chakra came from him. Law's lying next to the garden, arms behind his head. The pensive mood from the river hasn't lifted, and now instead of watching light ripple across water, he's watching the stars.
Stargazing. Again. I would not chart a course by these stars. That's what he said to Mister Lupin. The stars are different again. Not fixed.
And he still doesn't see a constellation he recognizes.
He'll wait for Itachi to come up. Or he'll stay all night here.

That's what Law greets the ninja with first thing in the morning. Well, he greets Itachi with tea and breakfast before that, but the happy birthday comes pretty quickly after.
The dreaded present doesn't materialize then. Maybe he's forgotten with the experiment? One can only wonder.
It's a Saturday and Law sneaks away to train soon after. He's back later, needing a shower and scratched and bruised. He's also quite satisfied and content, hallmarks of Law had a good fight and something got wrecked damn nice. Aside from his clothes. There's another pair of jeans torn.
And still the present doesn't materialize.
The scratches and bruises are gone by dinnertime, and after their meal, Law curls up, with a medical text, beside Itachi, wearing the most comfortable thing he has left in his closet. He's content to read in silence.
And then he smiles and closes his book.

To Itachi, he said he had a sudden project, one that would take up a good deal of his attention for the next couple of days. Something had passed into his possession from another pirate, Nico Robin, a set of handcuffs made of seastone belonging to a certain Marine enemy and he would be busy making keys to those cuffs for the next few days.
Because the handcuffs had to go back to the Marine sooner or later, or the consequences probably would be a major escalation of hostilities, which Law personally didn't want. All the pirate wanted to do was tease his enemy a bit and have him blind to the fact that he was making countermeasures. So preferably sooner.
Why were the handcuffs so important? Law promised to explain when he was done. He always wore gloves when handling them, and whenever they brushed bare skin? The pirate grew ashen like he was being sickened by their touch.
And as promised, the original handcuffs and their key were on the coffee table. The gloves Law were wearing was on his lap. And Law was waiting to explain what was going on.]

Luke's ritual can't stop these dreams. But it is stopping the others, and as Law gasps and shudders awake, he is grateful. These ones are less frequent. He doesn't need this on top of the ugly twisted mess that lurks in his subconscious. Just this, though horrible, is bearable.
He's probably woken Itachi, and he shifts to nuzzle into the side of his neck. It's just a nightmare. Go back to sleep. It's still early and both of them have earned a lazy morning in, and not only because it's a certain ninja's birthday.]

One can't wake on a recon mission screaming in their sleep, and medication can't be taken to dull the senses when all of one's senses have to be sharp at all times. So he lived in it, became one with it, and was therefore less affected by it. Crows fed on the carcasses of the dead, plucking wide-staring eyes free of their sockets, filling the air with their uncaring ruckus. Then he would become crows also, and they would become not a terror but just another part of the cycle. They do their part, a ninja does his.
At the nuzzle, he moves just enough to plant a light kiss on Law's forehead. The company does make things far more pleasant when he wakes again. He knows what day it is too, and as usual he will make no mention of it.]
