[This afternoon finds one CHEERFUL(?) Itachi walking out of the grocery, a bright SMILE(?) on his face and a full bag in his arms. He's HUMMING(??) something under his breath, a light bounce to his step.

He pulls out his journal casually, sending an unfiltered message to his brother.]

Sasuke. Are you recovering well?

[All of this is, of course, completely out of character for the ninja and possibly disturbing to anyone familiar with him.]

All right. [The lid is closed, and the bowl set back on the stand.

The next comment causes him to look slightly surprised, and it takes him a moment to realize that yes, his birthday had passed.]

Don't worry about it. I hardly notice it myself.

[There is something like the beginning of a smile sneaking onto his face. He's amused, and Itachi had a point, too. What were birthdays, anyway? He can't say anything like that, though, since he had been sappy enough to find a gift.]

Your present is still in my apartment. It's going to have to wait until I get out of here.

...I'm touched that you'd do that.

[Even if he isn't much for gifts. Or many possessions at all, really.]

[You might be surprised, then. He actually thought it through a bit. Somehow, it's difficult to hear Itachi say that, though. He looks down at his lap again. It just goes to show him that this isn't his thing.]

Don't be stupid.

[It's muttered, in a severe sort of tone that he kind of regrets. Because it's Sasuke who is the stupid one, that much is obvious.

Time to change the subject before this one drags on.]

Were you ever drafted?

[Itachi shakes his head.]

No. I've yet to be called in to fight here. I hear there's a certain method of compatibility involved.

[And perhaps luck. He would take the position for his brother any day.]

[Sasuke'd rather he didn't, so hearing this is good news to him.] Good. [And they better not try anything in the future either, seeing how impulsive Sasuke can be nowadays.]

... How do we know about the compatibility?

Just hearsay.

Apparently they brought in extras at one point and the lack of it caused them to experience some negative effects.

[Scoff.] All the information about this place that people think they have, is it all just guesswork? No wonder no one has found the way out yet.

So many things are vague, and we are left so far in the dark in an extreme disadvantage.

[There is a lot of conflicting thoughts here, so he'll be staying quiet for a bit, chewing on nothing. He isn't ready to believe there isn't a way out, but... How does he even approach the question if he actually wants to leave or not.]

...

I grow restless here.

I find that to be a common problem.

It's quiet, though. I like that, and I've found a few ways to keep myself occupied.

[If Sasuke wasn't still feeling weak, he probably would have lashed out around now. After all the feverish dreams and days in bed, the draft feels ages away, and any calming effect of having that in fresh memory is steadily going away. He doesn't feel sated in the slightest anymore, just slightly sick (in a way that has nothing to do with malaria) and more frustrated than ever. As it is, though, he just sighs and lays back down.]

I'm glad that you like it here. [Believe it or not, there's no sarcasm in there.]

And you? Is there anything I can do for you?

[Itachi leans in close, concern etched across his features.]

[Not looking at you.]

You've done enough for my sake. It's my turn.

If you believe I will ever stop doing things for you, you're sorely mistaken.

[Well. Sasuke isn't planning on causing him work by starting to ask for things, at any rate. Especially since the only thing that comes to mind at the moment is "forgive me" which would no doubt just make his brother uncomfortable.

All you get is stubborn silence, Itachi.]

[Itachi shakes his head with a small smile.]

It's alright. I know you'll be difficult.

... No worse than you.

[It's muttered. There's a bit of rare humor in there for the taking.]

Hmph.

[The sound is far more lighthearted than is normal for Itachi, but most of his actions have been.]

I suppose not.
