[Itachi doesn't get drunk, not in any way that shows, anyhow. He's the sort of stoic, no-nonsense individual who never appears to be affected by anything, even when he is.

He hardly looks it now, as he makes his way back to his apartment, but the ever so slight unevenness in his footsteps might be a giveaway to some.

Once he's home, he opens up his journal and just stares at the pages for a while before speaking.]

Not everyone deserves a second opportunity. What right do the Malnosso have to say who does?

I understand what you mean. It's akin to being in limbo.

I would think that the limbo would be better, at least one would know the reasons for being there and there wouldn't be experiments performed by a bunch of supposed adults. Being stuck here by the whim of children makes it just worse.

You rate our captors on the same level as children?

Whimsical, selfish, irresponsible, careless, with too much free time and no morals to control them while being in control of technology and powers far beyond what any rational being should trust them with. Even without going into details regarding the so called "experiments" they like to do they are far from what I would consider adult-like. Them being children would give them a small useless excuse for what they do.

[Small and useless indeed, even if they were just a bunch of kids Ikki would probably beat them anyway if he was given the chance before going back home.]

[Itachi is quiet and thoughtful for a moment.]

Have you seen many of them?

If you mean the Malnosso, we had to escort to safety some during the last draft, or at least they were linked to the Malnosso if they wanted those saved.

[A pause.]

If you meant someone like they are, I've met plenty even before coming here.

[There aren't many ways to describe the Gods anyway. Not even Saori was free of fault, though she did change at least.]

Like them? You know this for a fact?

[He'll ask about those others soon enough.]

I do. I can't think of many differences between them.

And what were they in your world?

What they were? They were Gods, [Then again... Thinking about Julian and Saori...] or at least beings powerful enough to have attained a status that could only be labeled as divine.

[Depends on whether one really accepts the very existence of Gods or not. Personally, Ikki has never cared either way.]

Gods...

You speak of something all-powerful. Do you truly think their abilities are that limitless?

Gods aren't all-powerful, neither are her abilities limitless. They are just powerful enough so that it seems they are so to the average human. The Malnosso are far from being Gods, but they have placed themselves in a similar position, they claim control of our lives and existences, control over the land we stay in, they control everything in Luceti. How's that different from a God that claims to control the whole world?

It's all just a matter of them being difficult to reach, once you get there face to face with them is when you see that there's no such a thing as an eternal, all-powerful being that can't be brought down.

Is this something you've done - bringing down gods?

It can be considered that it's what I was born for. I wasn't alone, though, so I won't claim to have the power myself to bring down a God single handedly. But I'm not weak enough either to just be crushed by them.

You worked with a group formed for that purpose?

Exactly as you said it.

[They were born for it. They were made orphans for it. Even since before they were born, their destinies were already decided to be those facing against Gods and anything that tried to harm the world.]

You chose to do this?

I did, but it's not as if I had much choice in the matter as it was everything settled so we would make this choice. It was this or death.

Do you prefer what you chose?

I see no point in wondering what would have been better. It was my choice no matter if it was settled to be like that or not, so I'll follow it through the end no matter the cost or pain.

They weren't words of love, or even words of forgiveness, they weren't words of compassion, just a mere wish, a belief she had deeper in her heart than he had it. ...Has it cost you a good deal?

It has... It may have yet to cost me even more, but going back is impossible anyway and I would lose far more than I have already.

[He lost his childhood. He lost his own self, he regained some of it but even he knows that the boy he once was has long since died. He lost Esmeralda. He lost his pure and innocent brother, because no matter how pure Shun manages to stay, they are in a cruel world and in constant fighting, there's no way he hasn't lost part of himself. He lost his future and life, or maybe he never had them to begin with, since everything was settled for him to do what Mitsumasa Kido wanted them to do. But he still has things that he can lose, it's hard to say if he's glad for it or not.]

Sometimes there are no good choices, it's true.

...You said you met some of the Malnosso. Tell me about them.

There was nothing useful in them. They were weak and we had to escort them to the safe areas back in the last draft, because they were too stupid and helpless to reach there themselves. A few scientist types and people who seemed only linked to them by family ties. If they are an example of what those guys really are the only problem with them is just getting to where they are to get them.

Not everyone can be a fighter. It's possible they're bereft of their own.
