[Itachi doesn't get drunk, not in any way that shows, anyhow. He's the sort of stoic, no-nonsense individual who never appears to be affected by anything, even when he is.

He hardly looks it now, as he makes his way back to his apartment, but the ever so slight unevenness in his footsteps might be a giveaway to some.

Once he's home, he opens up his journal and just stares at the pages for a while before speaking.]

Not everyone deserves a second opportunity. What right do the Malnosso have to say who does?

Sometimes there are no good choices, it's true.

[Itachi knows this just as well.]

...You said you met some of the Malnosso. Tell me about them.

There was nothing useful in them. They were weak and we had to escort them to the safe areas back in the last draft, because they were too stupid and helpless to reach there themselves. A few scientist types and people who seemed only linked to them by family ties. If they are an example of what those guys really are the only problem with them is just getting to where they are to get them.

Not everyone can be a fighter. It's possible they're bereft of their own.

That's true, but not every dangerous enemy has to be a fighter either. And sometimes the most dangerous ones aren't the strong ones but the smart ones. That said, back then the others were indeed more dangerous than the Malnosso that remained in the area.

If you consider the Malnosso a while group of beings, then some are bound to have more power than others.

[He's well aware that some of the most important voices in any society come from those who do very little of the actual fighting.]

That's true, and if it's an organization indeed we can expect it to be constructed in layers to ensure the strength of the group as a whole. Getting to them would only be the first step, but I'm confident in my strength in a physical fight no matter the opponent.

[The problem would be the intellectual part of the group in his case.]

And how would you suggest we do that first step of getting to them?

I'm not a strategic but a man of action. With the previous enemies I've faced we just took advantage of a counterattack or even were kindly invited to their lair, still had to fight our way up to them but we didn't have to search for them. The only enemy who hid from us was still easy to track down by following the energies of the soldiers they sent against us. I would say that managing to track down those droids that kidnap people could lead us somewhere but I've the feeling that the barrier may get in the way. And it seems that people are rendered helpless while they are kidnapped so we can't use that either.

[Maybe it would be different if Shiryuu was here, he was good at thinking. Or any of the Gold Saints, like Mü or Shaka. They would probably be able to see further than what Ikki can see.]

So basically all we have is what we can't do.

Maybe there's a way to get to them, but as I said strategy isn't my thing. And seeing hoe people have been trapped here for a long time it would seem that no one else has managed to find a way to get to them either.

[That's actually far more intriguing for Ikki. With so many people, how come no one has managed to find even a hint?]

Do you think it would be a stretch to say some people had, but were simply removed from the scenario at that time?

Not at all. The Malnosso have proved to be capable of altering our bodies and memories, and those journals don't stop being a device provided by them. If anyone were to send a message regarding something they don't want to be known it wouldn't be hard for them to erase that person from our memories as well as their entries and take care of said person. Even a kid would come to such a conclusion, or that there's an exit but that once it's found it takes the person who found it and thus the knowledge can't be shared.

That certainly makes the task seem somewhat impossible, doesn't it?

It does. But like I said, I don't believe in an impossible that lasts for long. Sooner or later, it will crack. And I'll be ready for it when it happens.

How do you expect to be ready?

Making sure I'm as strong as possible to fight back? I don't know what not being ready means anyway. I've been fighting since I was young, so that's basically the only thing I know how to do.
