If he won't tell you, then you can either choose to look into the situation further or leave him be. He might come out of it on his own, and clearly he doesn't want to worry you either even if it's too late for that.

You would need to watch him to see when he seems the most upset, or ask any friends of his who might know. Should you want to continue investigating, that is.
